This ongoing project has required detailed project management and a range of innovative infrastructure solutions. There were multiple pressures in the network and so it has required a complete upgrade to high pressure throughout. Our work has involved replacing the low pressure cast iron gas mains with HDPE pipework, which has been made more challenging in that the work is being undertaken in a busy urban location.
Pass on my thanks and appreciation to the Diona and Metro Utilities teams involved in mains replacement work at Fulham Gardens
n accordance with APA procedures, and particularly the Concrete Cutting Prior to Excavation Flowchart process, the Metro Utilities crew made a decision to isolate gas supply prior to cutting concrete due to concerns over a possible shallow service within a Multi User site based on readings from the locator. Following cutting and removal of the concrete multiple instances of shallow gas services were found within the unit site and the concut blade did actually contact the isolated gas service at Unit 6. The proactive actions of the crew to isolate gas supply prior to cutting the concrete prevented this becoming a Level 3 asset strike and exposing the workers to a hazardous situation. It also reinforces our belief that every asset strike is preventable.
